The Architecture of the Language Faculty

Over the past twenty-five years, Ray Jackendoff has investigated many complex issues in syntax, semantics, natural language generation and the relation of language to other cognitive domains. He steps back in this new book to survey the broader theoretical landscape in linguistics, in an attempt to identify some of the sources of the widely perceived malaise with respect to much current theorizing. Starting from the Minimalist necessity for interfaces of the grammar with sound, meaning, natural language generation and the lexicon, Jackendoff examines many standard assumptions of generative grammar that in retrospect may be seen as the product of historical accident. He then develops alternatives more congenial to contemporary understanding of linguistic phenomena. The Architecture of the Language Faculty seeks to situate the language capacity in a more general theory of mental representations natural language generation and to connect the theory of grammar with processing. To this end, Jackendoff works out an architecture that generates multiple co-constraining structures, natural language generation and he embeds this proposal in a version of the modularity hypothesis called Representational Modularity. Jackendoff carefully articulates the nature of lexical insertion natural language generation and the content of lexical entries, including idioms natural language generation and productive affixes. The resulting organization of the grammar is compatible with many different technical realizations, which he shows can be instantiated in terms of a variety of current theoretical frameworks. Lexical Priming

Lexical Priming proposes a radical new theory of the lexicon, which amounts to a completely new theory of language based on how words are used in the real world. Here they are not confined to the definitions given to them in dictionaries but instead interact with other words in common patterns of use. Classical theory holds that grammar is generated first natural language generation and words are then dropped into the opportunities thus created; Hoey`s theory reverses the roles of lexis natural language generation and grammar, arguing that lexis is complexly natural language generation and systematically structured natural language generation and that grammar is an outcome of this lexical structure. Using concrete statistical evidence from a corpus of newspaper English, but also referring to travel writing natural language generation and literary text, the author argues that words are `primed`for use through our experience with them, so that everything we know about a word is a product of our encounters with it. This knowledge explains how speakers of a language succeed in being fluent, creative natural language generation and natural.
